- What is Upper Mesopotamia in Turkey?
- Upper Mesopotamia is a historical-geographical term for the northern part of Mesopotamia, a region that extends across modern borders. In the context of our Turkey journeys, it refers to the southeastern corridor around Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, Mardin and Diyarbakır and the landscapes between the Euphrates and Tigris.
- What are the main places to visit in Upper Mesopotamia?
- Most journeys are built around Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum and old city, the Zeugma Mosaic Museum and bazaars of Gaziantep, Halfeti on the Euphrates, Mardin with Dara Ancient City, and the monasteries of Tur Abdin such as Deyrulzafaran and Mor Gabriel.
- How many days do I need for Göbeklitepe, Mardin and Gaziantep?
- Six to eight days is a comfortable range for all three. Six days and five nights covers Şanlıurfa, Halfeti and Mardin; eight days and seven nights adds Gaziantep at the start and allows the route to run in one direction rather than doubling back.
- Can Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe be visited on the same trip?
- Yes. The two sites lie within reasonable driving distance of Şanlıurfa and can be visited within the same journey, on the same day or across consecutive mornings depending on the opening arrangements current on your dates. We confirm the current official conditions when planning your dates.
- Is this a private tour?
- Every Sumera journey is private. You travel with your own party, your own licensed guide and your own driver, on a programme shaped for you alone.
- Do you provide English-speaking licensed guides?
- Yes. Licensed professional guides working in English are available, and guides in German, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Japanese can be requested subject to availability on your travel dates.
- Can I start in Gaziantep and finish in Mardin?
- Yes. A west-to-east route can begin in Gaziantep, continue through Halfeti and Şanlıurfa, and finish in Mardin or Diyarbakır. The reverse direction can also be arranged.
- Can the journey begin or end in Istanbul or Cappadocia?
- It can. Domestic flights connect Istanbul with Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Mardin and Diyarbakır, and Cappadocia can be added before or after the Mesopotamian section. Schedules vary by season, so we plan the ground arrangements around the flights available for your dates.
- What is included in a private Upper Mesopotamia journey?
- A typical journey includes a licensed professional guide, a private vehicle and driver, transfers, site entrance fees, accommodation in characterful or boutique hotels and local coordination throughout. Flights, meals outside the programme and personal expenses are quoted separately so the arrangement stays transparent.
- When is the best time to travel?
- Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable periods for outdoor archaeological visits. Summers in the region are hot and winter days are shorter, so daily timing is adapted to seasonal conditions and to official opening hours.
