Gaziantep & Zeugma
The Zeugma Mosaic Museum with its Roman floors recovered from the Euphrates, the historic bazaar quarters and copper workshops, and a regional culinary culture explored at well-chosen tables.

A privately guided journey linking Gaziantep’s mosaics and food culture, the archaeological landscape of Şanlıurfa and Göbeklitepe, and the stone city of Mardin — composed around your time and pace.
Three Cities, One Coherent Journey
Gaziantep opens the journey with Zeugma’s Roman mosaics, its bazaar quarters and a culinary tradition taken seriously. Halfeti and the Euphrates sit on the road east as an optional stop. Şanlıurfa is the archaeological centre — Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum, which provides wider context for the Taş Tepeler discoveries, Balıklıgöl and the old city. Mardin closes the arc with its terraced stone architecture, Dara Ancient City and the Syriac monastic heritage of Tur Abdin.
Sumera Expeditions’ specialist focus is Southeastern Turkey and Upper Mesopotamia, with journeys composed privately and tailor-made. Journeys are typically composed with licensed professional guides, private vehicles and transfers, characterful or boutique accommodation, and local coordination from arrival to departure.
The Composition
The Zeugma Mosaic Museum with its Roman floors recovered from the Euphrates, the historic bazaar quarters and copper workshops, and a regional culinary culture explored at well-chosen tables.
Halfeti and the Euphrates form a distinctive river landscape, including partly submerged remains visible from the water. A private boat experience can be arranged where river conditions and local operations permit.
The Taş Tepeler landscape around Şanlıurfa, where early Neolithic communities raised carved monumental enclosures. Visits follow the official opening and access conditions in force on your dates.
The Archaeology Museum and the Haleplibahçe mosaics, then Balıklıgöl, its courtyards and the covered bazaar — where the finds and the living city are read together.
A terraced stone city looking south over the Mesopotamian plain, with the carved cisterns, necropolis and quarries of Dara Ancient City a short drive away.
Deyrulzafaran and Mor Gabriel, the Syriac monastic heritage of the plateau east of Mardin, visited subject to the current visitor arrangements of each community.

Length of Journey
These are examples rather than fixed programmes. Every itinerary is tailor-made around your dates, your interests and the time you have.
6 days / 5 nights
A compact regional journey: arrival in Gaziantep, the Şanlıurfa archaeological core, Halfeti where the routing allows, and Mardin with Dara before departure.
8 days / 7 nights
The fuller west-to-east arc — Gaziantep, Halfeti, Şanlıurfa and Mardin — with additional cultural time in each city and no doubling back.
The wider regional context is set out on our private Upper Mesopotamia tours page. A shorter archaeological core follows our Göbeklitepe & Şanlıurfa private expedition, and the longer arc corresponds to the Mesopotamia journey. For a shorter journey centred on the Taş Tepeler sites, see our private Karahantepe tour, for Gaziantep and Zeugma alone, the private Gaziantep tour from Istanbul, and for Mardin alone, the private Mardin tour from Istanbul. For a route composed around the sites and museums, see our private archaeology tours in Southeast Turkey. See all private expeditions.
Suggested Shape
A framework rather than a fixed schedule. Flights, access arrangements and site conditions across the region can change, and the sequence is adapted to your dates, the season and the conditions in force at the time of travel.
Day 1 · Arrival in Gaziantep
Private airport transfer and an unhurried first evening in the city, with an introduction to the region from your licensed guide if timing allows.
Day 2 · Zeugma, Old City & Culinary Context
The Zeugma Mosaic Museum, then the historic bazaar quarters, copper workshops and the food culture that gives Gaziantep its standing in the region.
Day 3 · Halfeti & the Euphrates → Şanlıurfa
To the Euphrates and the river landscape at Halfeti, including partly submerged remains visible from the water where conditions allow, continuing by private vehicle to Şanlıurfa.
Day 4 · Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe & the Museum
Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe subject to the current visitor arrangements, and the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum, sequenced around official opening conditions and the pace of the journey.
Day 5 · Balıklıgöl, Old City & Local Culture
Balıklıgöl and its courtyards, the covered bazaar and the coppersmiths, and time given to the everyday culture of the city rather than only its monuments.
Day 6 · Şanlıurfa → Mardin & Dara
East across the plain, pausing at Dara Ancient City with its cisterns and rock-cut necropolis, then up to Mardin for the evening.
Day 7 · Tur Abdin & Mardin Old City
Deyrulzafaran and, where visitor arrangements allow, Mor Gabriel, followed by the stepped lanes, madrasas and terraces of the old city.
Day 8 · Departure
A last morning at your own pace and a private transfer to Mardin or Diyarbakır airport for onward flights.
Why Travel Privately With Sumera
Our work is concentrated on Southeastern Turkey and Upper Mesopotamia — Gaziantep, the Taş Tepeler sites, Şanlıurfa, Halfeti, Mardin and Tur Abdin — rather than the whole country.
Guiding is carried out by licensed professional cultural guides who read these landscapes carefully and answer questions properly, at your own pace.
Your party alone, with a private vehicle and driver from the first airport arrival to the final departure — no shared coaches and no fixed group departures.
Boutique hotels, restored stone mansions and courtyard houses chosen for their character and location rather than for a category on a list.
The sequence is built around your time and interests — an early start on the tepe, a slower museum morning, an afternoon left deliberately open.
Guides, drivers, hotels and site conditions are coordinated on the ground, so changes to opening arrangements or travel times are handled locally.
