Gaziantep opens the journey with Zeugma’s Roman mosaics, its bazaar quarters and a culinary tradition taken seriously. Halfeti and the Euphrates sit on the road east as an optional stop. Şanlıurfa is the archaeological centre — Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum, which provides wider context for the Taş Tepeler discoveries, Balıklıgöl and the old city. Mardin closes the arc with its terraced stone architecture, Dara Ancient City and the Syriac monastic heritage of Tur Abdin.

Göbeklitepe & Karahantepe
The Taş Tepeler landscape around Şanlıurfa, where early Neolithic communities raised carved monumental enclosures. Visits follow the official opening and access conditions in force on your dates.
Şanlıurfa Museum & Old City
The Archaeology Museum and the Haleplibahçe mosaics, then Balıklıgöl, its courtyards and the covered bazaar — where the finds and the living city are read together.
Mardin & Dara
A terraced stone city looking south over the Mesopotamian plain, with the carved cisterns, necropolis and quarries of Dara Ancient City a short drive away.
Tur Abdin

Day 1 · Arrival in Gaziantep

Day 5 · Balıklıgöl, Old City & Local Culture
Balıklıgöl and its courtyards, the covered bazaar and the coppersmiths, and time given to the everyday culture of the city rather than only its monuments.
Day 6 · Şanlıurfa → Mardin & Dara
East across the plain, pausing at Dara Ancient City with its cisterns and rock-cut necropolis, then up to Mardin for the evening.
Day 7 · Tur Abdin & Mardin Old City
Deyrulzafaran and, where visitor arrangements allow, Mor Gabriel, followed by the stepped lanes, madrasas and terraces of the old city.
Day 8 · Departure
A last morning at your own pace and a private transfer to Mardin or Diyarbakır airport for onward flights.

- Can I combine Gaziantep, Göbeklitepe and Mardin in one trip?
- Yes. Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa with Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, and Mardin can be combined in a coherent west-to-east journey, with the sequence adapted to your dates and arrival/departure points.
- How many days do I need for Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and Mardin?
- Six to eight days is a comfortable range. Six days and five nights covers the three cities at a reasonable pace; eight days and seven nights adds Halfeti on the Euphrates and more cultural time in each place.
- Where should I start and finish the trip?
- A west-to-east route beginning in Gaziantep and finishing in Mardin or Diyarbakır avoids retracing the same roads. The reverse direction can also be arranged, and the start and end points are chosen around the flights available for your dates.
- Can Halfeti be included between Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa?
- Yes. Halfeti can be included on the transfer between Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa when the chosen routing and timing make sense. The boat element depends on river conditions and local operations at the time of travel.
- Can Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe be visited on the same journey?
- Yes. Both lie within reasonable driving distance of Şanlıurfa and can be visited on the same day or across consecutive mornings. Access arrangements and opening conditions can change, so we verify the current official conditions while planning your dates.
- Is the journey private?
- Every Sumera journey is private. You travel with your own party, your own licensed guide and your own driver, on a programme composed for you alone.
- Do you provide English-speaking licensed guides?
- Yes. Licensed professional guides working in English are available, and guides in German, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Japanese can be requested subject to availability on your travel dates.
- Can the trip connect with Istanbul or Cappadocia?
- It can. Domestic air connections can link Istanbul with Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Mardin and Diyarbakır, depending on the schedules available for your dates. Cappadocia can be added before or after the Southeastern section when routing and timing allow; direct flights are not guaranteed, so the programme is planned around the best available connections.
- What is normally included?
- A licensed professional guide, a private vehicle and driver, transfers, site entrance fees, accommodation in characterful or boutique hotels and local coordination throughout. Flights, meals outside the programme and personal expenses are quoted separately so the arrangement stays transparent.
- When is a comfortable time to travel?
- Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable periods for outdoor archaeological visits. Summers in the region are hot and winter days are shorter, so daily timing is adapted to seasonal conditions and to official opening hours.
