What Makes This Different
Many archaeology tours of Turkey spread thinly across the whole country, linking distant regions into one long transit. Sumera deliberately concentrates on the Southeast and Upper Mesopotamia, where Neolithic, Hellenistic, Roman, late antique and Syriac Christian heritage can be read in one coherent route — and where our guides and drivers work week in, week out.
The Neolithic Taş Tepeler landscape around Şanlıurfa — Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe and their related sites — sits within a couple of hours of the Roman city on the Euphrates at Zeugma, whose mosaic floors are now shown in Gaziantep, and within a day's private drive of the late Roman and Byzantine frontier settlement of Dara near Mardin. Two museum collections, in Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep, carry much of what the sites themselves cannot show, and the old cities of Şanlıurfa and Mardin remain inhabited landscapes rather than exhibits. For travellers whose interest is archaeological rather than scenic, the region rewards a slow, privately arranged route more than a list of stops. Sites and Their Context
The Neolithic enclosures at Göbeklitepe — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — read differently once you have seen what came out of them. Pairing the site with the museum in Şanlıurfa, with its Neolithic halls and reconstructed enclosure, gives the visit its context rather than leaving it as a silhouette.
Karahantepe belongs to the wider Taş Tepeler landscape east of Şanlıurfa, where several related sites are under investigation. Visits follow the official visitor conditions in force on your dates, which we confirm while planning rather than assume.
The Roman city of Zeugma stood on the Euphrates; the floors recovered from it are now shown in Gaziantep. A long, unhurried reading of the mosaic galleries adds a Roman chapter to a journey that begins in the Neolithic.
The late Roman and Byzantine frontier settlement of Dara — quarried rock chambers, cisterns and necropolis — visited from Mardin under the arrangements in force at the site.
Halfeti is included as river landscape and modern history rather than as an archaeological site. It is optional, and any time on the water depends on the boat operations running and on conditions at the time of travel.

If the museum turns out to be the part you want most, the afternoon can move. Nothing in the day depends on other travellers keeping to a timetable.

Four days / three nights
Şanlıurfa-centred: Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe and the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum with proper time at each, and the old city read as context around them as the timing allows. This is the shape of our Göbeklitepe Discovery journey.
Six days / five nights
The Şanlıurfa core extended eastward or westward depending on routing — Mardin with Dara and the Tur Abdin landscape, or Gaziantep with the Zeugma mosaics, with Halfeti on the Euphrates as a possible stop between them.
Eight days / seven nights
A fuller Gaziantep–Halfeti–Şanlıurfa–Mardin arc, which is where site and museum time stops being rationed. Each of these is an example; the sequence is composed around your interests and the conditions in force on your dates.

Getting There
International arrivals usually connect through Istanbul and continue on a domestic flight into Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, Mardin or another sensible regional airport, depending on the route and on the schedules available. Private ground transfers then carry the journey between cities and sites; flights are not included in our arrangements unless we agree otherwise.
Timetables vary by date and season, so we plan around the connections actually available rather than assuming a particular service. On multi-day archaeology journeys an open-jaw arrival and departure — flying into one regional airport and out of another — can remove a good deal of backtracking when the schedules allow it.
