In our experience the visit is far better when you sleep in the region rather than attempt a rushed same-day return — a night in Şanlıurfa turns a long day of transit into an unhurried encounter.

A Common Question
Can you visit Göbeklitepe from Istanbul in one day?
Technically it can be possible, depending on the flight schedule on your dates: an early departure from Istanbul, a private transfer to the site, and a late evening return. It is not, however, the way we would recommend experiencing the region.
A same-day return leaves almost no margin — for flight delays, for the museum, for the light changing on the enclosures, for a proper conversation with your guide. Adding one night changes the experience entirely; three or four days gives Karahantepe, the old city and other regional sites room to breathe.

Day 2 · Karahantepe → Istanbul
An early drive to Karahantepe, subject to the site's current opening arrangements, with time for the pillared chamber and its carved figures. How do I get from Istanbul to Göbeklitepe?+
The practical route is to fly from Istanbul to Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (GNY) and continue by private road transfer to Göbeklitepe. How many days do I need for Göbeklitepe?+

It can. Şanlıurfa sits within easy driving distance of Gaziantep and its Zeugma mosaics, Halfeti and the Euphrates, and the terraced stone city of Mardin. The journey can also be extended into a longer Upper Mesopotamia itinerary rather than returning directly to Istanbul.
